A rapid increase in the number of vehicles requiring specialist expertise, together with a growing shortage of skilled technicians. The result is extended repair times and vehicles off the road longer. In the future our ability to move people, goods and essential services freely, punctually – and profitably – could be seriously affected.
Is a world where there is no shortage of the skills needed to keep the vehicles we depend upon running. So everyone can travel freely and more sustainably. When we launched our business, it was with the specific aim of tackling both the day-to-day and long-term challenges facing our industry, through our four business brands and our unrivalled partnership approach, we are challenging the status quo and are perfectly placed to meet the demands of our customers globally, today and in the future.
The origins of Autotech Group lie in our recruitment division. When working a Service Manager, one of our founders, Gavin White, found it increasingly difficult to implement strategic plans – let alone make money – without skilled workers in place. Back then, temporary solutions for sickness and holiday cover didn’t exist. And although car manufacturers used contractors, it hadn’t filtered down into after-sales. Identifying the need for a recruitment agency dedicated to placing temporary vehicle technicians, we began our own…
As Autotech Recruit grew, we began to see growing demand for temporary contractors from OEMs. But they needed their temporary technicians to be trained on specific OEM components. This led to the creation of Autotech Recruit’s Manufacturer Led Programme (MLP). MLP partnerships were soon forged with OEMs including Volvo, Ford, and BMW and contractors were put through OEM training and successfully placed within dealer sites. Since its launch in 2018, MLP has already helped the industry accrue over £11 million in additional revenue.
In 2016 Autotech Training was launched to upskill our contractor network and deliver MOT manager courses. As demand for our services increased, technical courses (including EV, ADAS and Air Conditioning) were added to our offering. In 2020, to support the industry as the electrification of vehicles escalated, we built a dedicated Electric Vehicle Training Suite, complete with an electric vehicle for hands-on learning and an electric vehicle safety kit. Around the same time, Gavin was asked to join the IMI’s TechSafeâ„¢ Sector Advisory Group to help drive forward the Electrified Vehicle agenda.
Autotech Academy was launched in 2021 to keep talent in the industry and create a pipeline of highly skilled technicians. Acting as a conduit between colleges and employers, we carry out a robust interviewing process and equip each intern with a toolkit and uniform before placing them in a 6-12 month paid internship. Cited as the industry’s missing link, Autotech Academy is partnered with over 116 UK colleges and has created over 450 interns since its launch.
In 2023 we partnered with leading hardware, software, training and IT providers to create our brand Autotech Connect. By curating innovative digital solutions, we are helping our customers standardise and improve workflows, increase the speed and quality of repairs and mitigate cybercrime risks. This way we are transforming BAU and providing a competitive advantage for a wide range of organisations, in workshops and in the field.
Members of our senior team hold non-executive positions with a number of leading industry organisations including The National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA), The School of Thought, Automotive 30% Club and Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). In 2022, Autotech Group ran an event to help delegates devise and deploy successful long-term recruitment strategies. Named ‘Talent Recharge: ‘How to gain, train and retain talent’ it attracted over 200 senior leaders from OEMs, dealer groups, independents and other automotive sectors along with industry trade bodies and the education sector.
We continue to engage directly with the industry and build even stronger ties. We are innovators, disruptors, collaborators – 100% focused on driving engagement and delivering change in the automotive and mobility sector, to make businesses more efficient, productive and profitable. We think differently and are not afraid to act or invest on behalf of our whole sector. If we don’t have a current solution, we will develop one.
